Freelance artists and creative professionals have virtually no effective legal recourse when clients refuse to pay for delivered work, even when invoices are substantial. Unlike other forms of theft (stealing a PS4 or jewelry results in jail time), non-payment for creative labor carries no real consequences, and the creator is the one who suffers further — spending time, money, and emotional energy chasing payment through small claims courts that are impractical for small amounts or across borders.
