Young Men Are Disengaging and Dropping Out of Higher Education With No Targeted Support or Early-Warning Intervention

Men have fallen below 40% of undergraduate enrollment and drop out without a degree at ~28% vs 23% for women, yet higher education offers dedicated outreach, advising and support programs for nearly every underrepresented group except young men. The pipeline breaks early in K-12 — boys are disproportionately held back, suspended and labeled with learning delays — and cultural stigma conditions them to quietly disappear rather than seek tutoring, advising or counseling. Institutions ignore the trend, treat it as a non-issue, and have no scalable way to identify at-risk male students, re-engage them, or route them to mentorship and support. The economic fallout is severe and widening (recent job gains were overwhelmingly captured by women), affecting workforce health, family stability and mental health.
