Independent artists and freelance creatives are routinely pressured into signing grossly one-sided contracts — often disguised as an 'NDA' and presented before the project scope is even disclosed — that demand full exclusive assignment of all intellectual property, a waiver of moral rights, surrender of raw/editable source files on request, and a ban on showing the work in their portfolio or naming the client without written approval for each use. These terms are bundled with 10-year confidentiality obligations, retroactive clauses, and foreign jurisdiction/venue requirements that the artist cannot realistically enforce or contest, and the rate is fixed before the artist learns these obligations exist. The artist is forced into a take-it-or-leave-it decision under time pressure, with no negotiation leverage and no way to assess whether the terms are standard. This is severely painful and effectively unsolved: legal review costs hundreds to thousands of dollars and is unavailable in the minutes before a signature is demanded, generic contract templates do not flag exploitative clauses, and there is no trusted, affordable way for creatives to benchmark 'normal' terms, understand what rights they are actually giving away, or push back with a defensible counter-position.
