  • A 46-year-old son took his 82-year-old mother with dementia into his home (with his wife and three sons), agreeing to a monthly stipend far below facility cost, because he believed she would not survive a senior living facility. For nearly two years he received zero support — no calls, no visits, no relief — from his father or his 50-year-old sister. Then, during a 'family reunion' the father and sister planned without consulting him, the father pulled him aside and announced he had toured a facility in another state, put down a deposit, and would be moving his mother back with him — a decision made entirely without the people who had been providing 24/7 care. When the son exploded and punched a door, his father accused him of elder abuse. This is the exact failure mode that destroys families: there is no shared care plan, no allocation of responsibilities, no record of who is doing what, no mediation when siblings disagree, and no way for a long-distance or hands-off family member to be held accountable or for the frontline caregiver to have a real voice. Caregiver coordination apps track tasks but do not touch the underlying problem — decision rights, unequal burden, and the moral accusation that follows the person doing the most work. Families are left with rage, estrangement, and no trusted neutral process for deciding where an aging parent lives and who pays and who shows up. Highly painful, extremely common in the aging population, and fundamentally unsolved.
