  This is the raw core of the vocabulary-mastery problem and it is still unsolved. Learners describe putting in enormous effort — courses, reading, apps, 20-40 new words a day, '8-hour' study days, 6,000 flashcard reviews — yet ending up with a vocabulary of only 100-300 words after three years, or still at a 'basic level' after a year because the routine becomes 'tiring or boring.' The failure is not lack of exposure; it is that words looked up while reading evaporate immediately ('I keep forgetting words right after looking them up'), retention never compounds, and the burst-then-burnout cycle erases the small gains that were made. Existing tools attack the wrong layer: they add more input, more decks, and more lists (Anki, Duolingo, vocab apps), which raises the maintenance load and accelerates the burnout rather than fixing the fact that context-encountered words are never captured or revisited in a way that makes them stay. Learners also complain they cannot drill the specific retrieval behavior they need (e.g. 'wish I could do a whole lesson of just those' production-style prompts), so practice never matches the gap. The result is shame, hopelessness, and repeatedly giving up — a severe, high-pain gap with no tool that quietly captures the words you meet in-context and brings them back until they actually stick.
