• Video captions exist in only one language, forcing learners to leave the video to translate and shattering immersion

  Learners immersing in native content (YouTube, Netflix, movies) consistently hit the same wall: the platform only offers captions/subtitles in a single language — usually the target language — so there is no bilingual, side-by-side view synced to playback. When they inevitably hit an unknown word or an entire incomprehensible passage, they must stop the video, switch to a separate translator app or dictionary extension, and look it up manually, which breaks flow, kills momentum, and turns active immersion into stop-start drudgery. Even a committed intermediate at 1,500+ hours reports that 'TV shows/movies have been a massive disappointment... huge sections I am just mystified or completely lost if I don't have subtitles... without a translator app it's not going to become comprehensible.' The few existing tools are fragmented and unsatisfying: they send every line to a cloud translation API (privacy, latency, cost), don't do word-level click-to-lookup, aren't synchronized cleanly, or ignore the learner's need to track which words have already been learned. No mainstream product delivers instant bilingual captions with in-place, click-to-define word lookup that keeps the learner inside the video and quietly remembers their vocabulary progress — leaving a severe, high-frequency, clearly monetizable gap for exactly this audience.
