• Students Passively Read and Fail to Retain Complex Material With No Active-Reading Scaffolding

  Students believe they are 'studying' when in reality they are only passively scanning text, failing to build mental maps, track viewpoints, or retain complex information. The quoted tutor notes that 'it's very common for students to think they're actively reading when, in reality, they are just passively reading,' and that students typically verbalize almost no active thoughts about the text. The techniques that fix this (predicting, summarizing, rephrasing in one's own words, connecting referential language) are rarely taught and are not scaffolded by any existing note-taking, reading, or study app. Comprehension depends entirely on techniques the learner is left to discover alone, producing chronic underperformance and poor retention of complex material.
