r/miamioh — public pain points

• College students are stuck with unprepared, disengaged instructors who read slides cold and burn class time — with no effective recourse or way to recover lost learning

Students describe instructors arriving minutes before class to skim the textbook, reading PowerPoint slides aloud for the first time, mispronouncing basic terms, showing hour-long irrelevant videos, and making no effort to connect with the class. Students pay tuition and sit through 90-minute sessions that deliver almost no instruction, forcing them to self-teach from slides and outside resources. Existing accountability mechanisms (end-of-term evaluations, department complaints) are too slow and low-leverage to change anything. There is no product that helps students detect gaps, supplement poor lectures in real time, or give institutions a scalable early-warning signal on teaching quality. The pain is severe, recurring, and widespread in higher education, yet no good solution exists — students either silently self-teach or disengage.
